Spyros A. Sofos

Political sociologist with a PhD from the University of Copenhagen, based at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. I was previously a Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science Middle East Centre, a Lecturer at Lund University, a Senior Research Fellow at Kingston University, a Senior Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at Portsmouth University and held a research fellowship at the University of Kent.

My publications include three monographs, and an edited volume, along with over 40 scholarly articles and chapters, complemented by a range of op-eds. My latest work, Turkish Politics and ‘The People’: Mass Mobilisation and Populism was released by Edinburgh University Press in September 2022. In 2019, in collaboration with openDemocracy, I initiated #RethinkingPopulism in partnership with openDemocracy in 2019, which, in 2022, became an independent university-supported platform, with me as the lead editor. As a commentator, I contribute regularly to outlets like The Conversation, the LSE Blog, OpenDemocracy, Dialoguemos and Truthout addressing various social and political topics.
